The Winning Post 2022 Ladies & Gents Competition Reports

Posted on August 14, 2022 | by Mark Street

A week of hot weather presented an additional challenge to our competitive golfers as well as our greenkeepers. Thursday is our starting point with the Carrbridge Ladies hosting the Grantown Ladies for a friendly match and although the heat brought the match to a early conclusion after 16 holes and the teams agreed to a draw, everyone enjoyed the occasion and the soup and sandwiches provided by William and Jacqui post match. The visiting ladies had much praise for the condition of the course. Saturday was the Charity Texas Scramble (see separate report). Sunday was an unplanned Stableford for the gents, filling in one of the unused reserve days. On a hot morning the scoring was surprisingly good with 6 of the field scoring 40 or more. Top score was 47 from Mark Street with Kevin Taylor second with 44 and Stewart Taylor third on count back with 43.

Four club competitions this week to report on. Wednesday was the latest round of the eclectic competition for the gents. Charlie Macdonald returned a fine score of 63 ahead of Ken Malcolm (68) and Jock Clark and Stewart Taylor both with 69. For the overall standings click GENTS. The ladies turn for the eclectic next and only Ruth Walker returned a score but did anyone make any progress in the leaderboard. Click LADIES to see. Sunday was the monthly medal and in the gents competition it was Kevin Taylor (64) who took the prize on a day with only two scores below par. Jamie Gordon (66) and Lewis MacBean (71) made up the top three. The ladies winner was Helen Lorimer with 74 followed by Aisne Imperiale with 85 and Cath McCook with 87. Well done to our winners and thank you to all our competitors for your continued support of club competitions.

The ladies begin our competition reports with a Stableford competition on Thursday. The winner was Ruth Walker with 42 points, ahead of Helen Lorimer (41) and Shona Rankin (40). The dynamic duo of Ruth and Helen featured strongly in the Ladies Open on Saturday (see separate report). The gents took advantage of a reserve day which hasn’t been needed this season and played an extra Stableford competition. Alan Watson finished on top with 42 points ahead of Rob Nixon with 40 point and Bob Pattillo with 39 points. Well played all our competitors.

A busy week for competitions this week starting with the Gents Stableford on Wednesday and another win for Calum Forsyth with 41 points ahead of Lewis MacBean who just pipped Rob Nixon to second on count back with both players returning 38 points. The Ladies Stableford was the next day and it was Aisne Imperiale who was victorious with a very fine 45 points , ahead of Helen Lorimer with 39 and Ruth Walker with 33. Sunday welcomed the Jock Crilley Memorial Trophy for both the gents and ladies. In the gents section it was Charlie Macdonald with a nett 66 who topped the leader board with Jono Baldwin taking second on count back from Alan Watson both with 69. In the ladies section it was a second win of the week for Aisne Imperiale with 69 ahead of Helen Lorimer (72) and Amanda Shepherd (75). Well played to our winners.

This weeks competition reports begins with the Ladies Extra Medal from Thursday with Ann Rae taking the top spot with a round of 64 ahead of Shona Rankin who just pipped Helen Lorimer to second place on count back with both players returning a score of 69. Then on Sunday the attention turned to the Macgillivray Charity Cup with both the gents and ladies taking part on a warm, windless day. In the ladies it was very close with Helen Lorimer just edging out Esther Stoddart on count back after both carded scores of 74, followed by Ruth Walker with 76. The gents were on good form with half of the field scoring under 70 but the best score of 63 belonged to our Senior Open Champion, Vince McLaughlin, second was Bill Baird with 65 and third was Lewis MacBean with 66. The proceeds of £88 was donated to Dementia Scotland. Thank you to all our competitors and well done to our winners.

Sponsor Helen Lorimer Presents Aisne Imperiale With The Winners Trophy

Busy week at the club and the gents began with the 4th round of the Eclectic competition and although the winner on the day was Mark Street did the results have any impact on the overall leader board? See for yourself by clicking ECLECTIC. The ladies also had the 4th round of the Eclectic competition and the winner on the day was Esther Stoddart but the overall standings can be viewed by clicking ECLECTIC. Then Sunday welcomed the Graham Lorimer Memorial Trophy for both gents and ladies. Conditions were perfect and with a full field for the gents the scene was set for a great contest. It was a close race to the top with both Lewis MacBean and Bill Baird topping the scoring with 41 points but Lewis just taking it on count back and Jock Clark third on 39 points. The runaway winner of the ladies was Aisne Imperiale with 37 points, 5 points clear of Ann Rae in second, Helen Lorimer came in third with 31 points. Well played to all our competitors and a big thank you to Helen Lorimer for sponsoring the competition.

The ladies Mann Trophy Round 3 took place on Thursday and it was Esther Stoddart who topped the field with 34 points followed by Ann Rae (33) and Ruth Walker (31). To see the overall scoreboard click MANN. Then Sunday welcomed the gents and ladies July Medal, the ladies winner was Ruth Walker with a nett score of 72 with Helen Lorimer second with 81. In the gents section it was a photo finish for the top spot with Mark Street, Alan Watson and Ken Mackenzie all finishing with a nett 68 and after count back it was Mark Street who just won by a nose from Ken Mackenzie and Alan Watson with Henry MacPherson taking the two’s pot. Well played and thank you to all our competitors.

The Club Championships took centre stage this week. The ladies played their first round on Thursday and the early lead was taken by Amanda Shepherd in the scratch category and Aisne Imperiale and Ann Rae in the handicap. So with everything to play for the ladies set out on Sunday afternoon for round 2. No doubt about our Ladies Club Champion in the scratch category with Amanda Shepherd returning a total of 175, 27 shots ahead of second place Shona Rankin who just pipped Helen Lorimer by one shot. The handicap section was another story however with three players finishing with 149 and after count back it was Esther Stoddart who turned in the round of the day with 71 and taking the title, with Amanda Shepherd and Ann Rae coming a very close second and third. The Gents Club Championship began on Saturday and with a number of withdrawals for illness the field of 15 golfers began the challenge of negotiating 36 holes over 2 days. The results were mixed with variable winds used as an excuse by many but no excuses from Rob Nixon who laid the platform for the second day with a fine 69 (65) 10 shots ahead David Forsyth, with Stewart Taylor a further 4 shots adrift. In the handicap section the situation was a little bit closer with new member John Macfarlane (69) and Vince McLaughlin (68) chasing down the leader. With 2 extra players joining the field for the second day the battle lines were drawn and with the draw made in order of position after day 1 there was a air of excitement as each group came through to the last hole and returned their cards for score entry. The overnight leader did not look happy. Had he thrown it away? The scores were entered and although the chasing pack made some ground on the leader, it wasn’t enough to change the result. The 2022 Gents Club Champion is Rob Nixon, with Jamie Gordon and Andy Murray making up the top three. The handicap section was topped by a fine performance from John Macfarlane who returned a 62 to add to his 69, Vince McLaughlin was second with a total of 133 and Lewis MacBean third with 142. Well done to our winners and thank you to all our competitors.

Lots to report this week. Wednesday was the Gents Stableford competition and the top two came from the late group of Tomatin players. Alan Watson coming out on top with 42 points and in second place Colin Campbell, just edged out Vince McLaughlin on count back, both players carding 41 points. Thursday it was the ladies who took to the field in the third round of the eclectic competition. Shona Rankin took the top spot from Ann Rae with both players hitting 69 and Helen Lorimer was third with 74 but did anyone improve their overall score? Ladies Eclectic table. Saturday was the annual Landmark Quaich Texas Scramble. Three teams bravely fought the strong wind that made for difficult golf but all teams performed well, returning good scores. But it was the team of Aisne Imperiale, Alan Boxx, Jono Baldwin and Mark Street that took the top place by one shot with a nett 49. Everyone enjoyed a fine burger and fries provided by William and Jacqui in the clubhouse afterwards, a big thank you to them for completing a memorable day. And finally Sunday saw the gents competing in the June Medal. On a good scoring day with half the field returning scores in the 60’s, nobody could reach the 61 scored by Calum Forsyth, nearest challenger was Malcolm Sclater with 66 and then Rob Nixon with 68. Well done and thank you to all our competitors this week.

Sunday brought an extra Stableford competition for the gents and Andy Murray won but only just with 39 ahead, on count back, of Calum Forsyth with Mark Street third on count back with 38 ahead of Andy Fraser.

The ladies took part in round 2 of their eclectic competition and on the day it was Helen Lorimer who was victorious but how have the overall standings been affected by this weeks scores. Click ECLECTIC to see for yourself. The Sunday competition saw ladies and gents competing in an extra medal. The ladies winner was Esther Stoddart with a nett 77 ahead of Helen Lorimer with 84 and Aisne Imperiale with 85. The gents competition saw a field of 26 battle it out for the top spot. With 5 players scoring below 70 the scoring was good but Ken Malcolm’s 66 was the best, followed by Ken Mackenzie with 68 and Robin Pollock with 69. Well played to all our winners.

Thursday welcomed the Ladies May Medal and it was Amanda Shepherd with 72 winning from Helen Lorimer and Esther Stoddart both with 74. To round the week off the May Medal on Sunday saw 16 grown men trying to guide a small ball around a field with holes in it using a stick. The winner with the fewest shots was Vince McLaughlin with 67 followed by Jock Clark 68 and Jono Baldwin 69.
